Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has called upon people to develop a culture of hygiene and cleanliness.

After seeing a photograph published in these columns on Thursday of a garbage heap in part of Swaraj Maidan, located in the heart of the city, Mr. Naidu got angry and said of dereliction of duty on the part of the municipal corporation would not be tolerated.

Sitting in the real-time governance centre, the Chief Minister conducted a virtual inspection of the garbage in the grounds and said it was imperative for people to develop a culture of cleanliness. He said he was suspending the municipal staff responsible for cleaning up that area.He said this monsoon season he did not want to see overflowing drains anywhere in the State and directed Municipal Commissioners to instruct the staff to take adequate measures. Even in villages, sanitation should be given top priority, he said.

Mr. Naidu warned that the official concerned would be held responsible for accumulation of garbage in his area.Expressing displeasure over heaps of discard at rythu bazaars, he said the municipal officials, staff and the contractors were responsible for clearing it regularly without allowing it to accumulate. All towns should be clean and water should not be allowed to stagnate anywhere, he clarified.

He said in case of any problem, people could lodge a complaint by calling 1100.He said 4,500 cameras had been installed for a constant vigil for any possible anti-social activities. He said from July 1, he would directly interact with people to get a first hand account of the problems they were facing in order to solve them at the earliest.
